Mickelson Changes Swing Coaches

By georgebeardsley

It’s Official – Phil Mickelson has decided to stop using Rick Smith as his primary swing coach and give Butch Harmon a shot at keeping his driver in play. Mickelson has struggled with his driver (mostly missing it left under pressure) for a few years now – and without question – for Phil to make a run at more majors, he needs a more efficient long game. Can Butch Harmon be the answer? I think yes.

As a teacher, I realize students sometimes need to hear things a little differently to make a step in their swings. Often they can become desensitized to the same information over and over again. David Leadbetter, one of the world’s top instructors, agrees. “Sometimes, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what’s going on; sometimes you just need a little different communication,” said Leadbetter. “Butch is not going tell him a whole lot different than what Rick was telling him, but he might tell him a different way. Phil’s inconsistencies with his driver have created a lot of problems.”
